Microscope slide label template
A slide label has to survive xylene, ethanol and a hot plate, and it has to fit in the 20 mm of frosted end that is not under the coverslip.
The frosted end is the whole canvas
A standard microscope slide is 25 × 75 mm, and the frosted or coloured end occupies roughly the first 20 mm. That is the only part of the slide a label can occupy without interfering with the section, the coverslip or the objective's working distance.
25.4 × 19.05 mm fills that end with a small margin. Anything taller intrudes on the specimen area; anything applied over the plain glass will meet the coverslip and the mounting medium, and will lift.
Slide labelling in practice
- Label after processing where you can
- The simplest way to survive xylene is not to be in it. If the workflow allows labelling at the coverslipping stage, do that.
- Print, do not write, the identifier
- Pencil on frosted glass survives everything, which is why it persists — but it is unreadable at a distance and impossible to scan. A printed label plus a pencilled backup is a reasonable belt and braces.
- Leave room for the 2D code
- At 25 × 19 mm there is room for a 12 mm code and three short lines beside it, which is enough to key into a slide inventory.
- Watch the hot plate
- Slide driers run at 60–70 °C for extended periods. Direct thermal print will darken uniformly and become unreadable.

Orientation matters more here than anywhere else
A slide is handled in one orientation and read in another. The label is read with the slide held up to the light, but the section is examined with the slide on a stage, frosted end to the left on most microscopes — so a label printed to read along the slide's length is upside down half the time.
The convention worth adopting is to print across the short axis, reading left to right when the slide is held with the frosted end at the top. That way the label reads correctly both in the hand and in a slide folder, which is where it will spend most of its life.
What a slide label competes with
- Thickness
- A slide folder and an automated stage both have tight clearances. A thick label or a laminate can stop a slide seating properly.
- The coverslip edge
- Mounting medium runs. A label that reaches the specimen area will end up partly under the medium, where it lifts and clouds.
- The immersion objective
- On a fully covered slide the objective can travel further than expected. Keeping the label on the frosted end keeps it out of the objective's path.
