Brother P-touch for lab labels
A P-touch prints on a continuous laminated tape. That gives it the best solvent resistance of any cheap label printer and the worst fit to a fixed label size.
What TZe laminated tape is actually good at
Brother's TZe tapes are laminated: the printed image sits underneath a clear protective film rather than on the surface. That construction is why P-touch labels survive ethanol wipes, abrasion and handling far better than a direct thermal label — the solvent never reaches the ink.
For a laboratory this is a genuine advantage, and it is why P-touch labels turn up on shelves, bins, freezers and equipment across a great many labs. The lamination is doing the same job as an over-laminate on a much more expensive industrial label.
Continuous tape versus a fixed label size
A P-touch is a tape printer: the length is whatever the content needs, cut to fit. That is the opposite of what exact-size label design assumes, where the label is a fixed rectangle and the content has to fit inside it.
The practical consequence is that a P-touch is excellent for one-off identification — a shelf, a bottle, a piece of equipment — and awkward for anything where the label must be a specific size, such as a vial that has to wrap in a specific way. For those, a die-cut label on a roll or a sheet is a better match.
Getting exact-size output from a P-touch path
- Set the tape width in the driver to the tape that is loaded
- A mismatch here is the most common cause of output that is scaled or clipped, and it is silent.
- Turn off auto-fit and auto-length
- P-touch software will happily resize type to fill a tape. Any automatic sizing means the printed size is not the designed size.
- Set a fixed length rather than auto
- If you need a specific label length — to wrap a specific vessel — specify it rather than letting the content decide.
- Measure the first one
- Print a label with a known dimension on it and check it against a rule. Once per model and tape width is enough.

Common questions
- Are Brother P-touch labels ethanol resistant?
- TZe laminated tapes hold up well to routine ethanol wiping, because the printed image is underneath a clear laminate rather than on the surface. That is their main advantage for laboratory use.
- Can a P-touch print cryogenic labels?
- The print survives cold well thanks to the lamination, but standard TZe adhesive is not specified for −80 °C or liquid nitrogen. For deep-freeze storage use a cryo-specified label rather than general-purpose tape.
- Why is my P-touch label shorter than I designed?
- Auto-length or auto-fit is on, or the driver's tape width does not match the loaded tape. Both silently change the printed size.
