Brady labels for laboratory use

Brady sells into industries where a label failure is a safety incident. That is why the materials cost what they do, and why some laboratory uses genuinely need them.

Self-laminating wraps solve the durability problem properly

A self-laminating label has a printed panel and a clear tail. You wrap the printed panel round the item and the clear tail continues over the top of it, so the print ends up sealed between the label and its own laminate. Nothing external ever touches the ink.

For a laboratory this is the most robust answer available to solvent wiping and abrasion, and it works with whatever print method is underneath. The trade is that the label needs enough circumference for a printed panel plus an overwrap, which rules out the smallest tubes.

When the industrial material is worth it

Cell banks and irreplaceable stocks
A label failure on a master cell bank is not a re-print, it is a loss. This is the clearest case for a specified cryogenic material.
Regulated or audited work
Where traceability has to be demonstrable years later, the label has to still be legible years later.
Chemical stores and solvent bottles
Constant handling and constant solvent contact — exactly what self-laminating wraps exist for.
Equipment and safety marking
Anything that must remain legible for the life of the instrument.

Verify part numbers against the current catalogue

Industrial label materials are identified by part numbers that change with product revisions, and the same nominal material can differ between regions. This site deliberately does not quote them, because a stale part number in a search result is worse than none.

What is stable is the material class: self-laminating vinyl for wraps, polyester for solvent and temperature resistance, and specified cryogenic faces for deep-freeze storage. Take those to the supplier and ask what currently meets them.

Designing for a wrap label

A self-laminating wrap has an asymmetric layout: the printed panel is only part of the label, and the rest is clear. Design software that assumes the whole rectangle is printable will place content under the laminate tail, where it is legible but distorted by the wrap.

In this editor, set the label size to the printed panel rather than to the whole die-cut label, and treat the tail as something the printer adds. The preview then shows what will actually be read.
