Labels for −80 °C freezers
A −80 °C freezer is not simply cold. It is cold, wet, and cycled — and it is the cycling that takes labels off.
The frost cycle is the real load
Every time a drawer is opened, room air enters, condenses on everything inside, and freezes. Every time a box comes out to the bench, that frost melts into liquid water and runs into the edges of every label on every vial in it. The box goes back, and the water freezes again — now underneath the label edge rather than on top of it.
Ice under an edge is a wedge. Repeat it fifty times over two years and even a good adhesive is levered off. This is why a label can be perfect for a year and then fail, and why labels in boxes that are frequently accessed fail far more than labels in boxes that are not.
Design for the frost, not just the cold
- Minimise exposed edge
- A wrap with a small gap has two short edges facing the world. A rectangular label on a curved surface has four, two of them lifting away from the curve.
- Apply warm and dry, then wait
- The single highest-value habit. Room temperature vial, dry surface, firm pressure, and 24 hours before it goes down.
- Do not re-label a frozen vial
- A label applied to a frosted vial has no bond at all. If a vial must be re-labelled, let it come to room temperature and dry first — or label the box position instead.
- Keep the box out of the freezer for as little time as possible
- Every minute on the bench is condensation that will freeze under an edge later. Work from a chilled rack.
Legibility through frost
Frost scatters light and kills contrast, which affects small type disproportionately. Thin strokes disappear first, so a light or hairline typeface that looks elegant on a screen becomes unreadable at −80 °C in a way a regular weight does not.
Practical rules: use a regular or medium weight rather than a light one, keep the identifier at least a point larger than everything else on the label, and print black on white rather than any coloured combination. Colour is useful for grouping at a distance and useless for reading up close through ice.

Common questions
- Do normal labels work in a −80 °C freezer?
- Paper labels do not — they wick condensation and lift. A synthetic face with a permanent adhesive may survive if it is applied warm and given time, but for anything you need in two years use a cryo-specified material.
- Why do labels fall off after a year rather than immediately?
- Because the mechanism is cumulative. Water enters the label edge on each warm-up and freezes as a wedge on each cool-down. The bond fails progressively, not at once.
- Can I label vials that are already frozen?
- No — there is no bond to a frosted surface. Bring the vial to room temperature and dry it, or record the information against the box position instead.
